What is a cheetah?


The swahili name for a cheetah is Duma. Their scientific name is Acinonyx jubatus. Cheetahs are 30 inches at the shoulder and have a length of 48-56 inches long. They weigh anywhere from 110 to 140 pounds. The life span of the cheetah is 10 to 20 years. 

Where does the cheetah live?


The cheetah lives in the open plains of Africa. The plains tend to be desert-like, have tall grass, are in open savannas, and can be very hot. When it's time for the cheetah to take shelter they use thick brush. You can find lots of animals in the cheetah's environment. For instance gazelle, lions, giraffes, elephants ,and hyenas.

What does a cheetah eat?


Cheetahs are carnivores ,and they eat a variety of  small animals.To catch their food, cheetahs scan the plains from a tree limb or the top of a termite mound.

Why are cheetahs almost extinct?


 Man  poses a threat to the cheetahs by hunting, poaching, and reducing their habitat.  In order to protect the cheetah's habitat  livestock farmers must be taught to co-exist with cheetahs.
